Scholarship Information

The Orchesis dance group explores a wide variety of dance styles from ballet to modern.  They organize a yearly dance show in December, which anyone is welcome to join.  In conjunction with the Amber Foundation of Chicago, they are presenting a scholarship to a senior boy or girl who:

•  Is college-bound from GBS
• Has been a member of GBS Orchesis for at least 3 years

Brian Matthew Kennedy came from a typical American family and grew up in a small town just like thousands of others, but Brian was anything but average.  National Honors Society. Varsity football.  All-state lacrosse player.  College engineering student.  All along the way, everywhere he went, Brian Kennedy distinguished himself as an extraordinary human being--caring, considerate, hard working, and generous with his time and talents.

• Male or Female student athlete
• Member of the National Honors Society
• Must demonstrate a sense of civic duty to the community by participating in activities that benefit the Village of Glenview
• Must be accepted to an accredited college or university with the intention of being college-bound

This scholarship recognizes a senior student with outstanding community service work and excellent academic achievement. An academic GPA of 3.25 or higher is required.

This scholarship is for a graduating senior student who is - or was in ESL classes, and will continue his/her journey at a college. This scholarship celebrates students who succeed at the challenges posed by a new language and a new culture. 

Mama Glass was a beloved parapro who worked at Glenbrook South for 37 years.  She touched the lives of generations of students as a friend, advisor, and confidante,   started the Pep Club, and was an integral part of any and all spirit-based activities and fundraising.  Although she officially retired in 2005, she still attended parades, homecoming, athletic events, and theatrical and musical performances at GBS until her passing in April of 2010.
 
The Carolyn “Mama” Glass scholarship will be presented to a student who meets the following qualifications:
 
• Pep Club member
• Demonstrator of outstanding spirit and commitment to Glenbrook South
• Financial need may be considered
 

Craig G. Stifler was an attorney, avid swimmer, and former student of Glenbrook South High School.   
 

• Provides evidence that he/she will be attending an accredited 2- or 4-year college or university
• Is, or has been, a member of the GBS boys or girls swim team or water polo team for at least two (2) of the last 3 years and/or has served as a GBS lifeguard for at least two of the last 3 years 
• Has maintained a record of excellent academic performance (top 50% class rank) and community citizenship 
• Additional consideration will be given to those students who have been accepted to participate on a collegiate-level swim/water polo team and/or have demonstrated financial need

 Relevant GBS coaches or program directors will be contacted for a recommendation.
 

Daniel Johnson was a young man who died much too young from brain cancer.  He was a regular guy with a great sense of humor, a family man, and a great friend.  And for Danny, friends were family.  What he wasn’t was a great golfer.  But he loved the game and, more importantly, the camaraderie of the game.  Danny was the inspiration for Our Family Charity Golf Outing, which is the primary fundraiser for this scholarship.

A current graduating Glenbrook South senior applying for this scholarship should have the following qualifications:

• Student must have an academic GPA of 3.0 or higher
• Financial need will be considered
• Student exemplifies citizenship, commitment, and team spirit

Student should have an association with the game of golf, whether through team involvement or personal meaning
 

Daniel Razes served the Field Middle School community for over 40 years as both an assistant principal and educator. He was committed to developing the whole student-academically, socially and emotionally.  He championed the whole school experience and celebrated students who demonstrated all-around citizenship and brotherhood.  This scholarship, given in memory of Mr. Razes, will recognize Field alumnus who gave his or her best effort in academics and contributed to the community, within and beyond the school, through service and activities.
 
This scholarship will be selected based upon the following student criteria:

• must be a graduate of Field School and be a graduating senior from Glenbrook South High School
•  must provide evidence that he/she will be attending a four-year college/university for the fall of their graduating year 
• must have put forth their best effort in academic pursuits
• demonstrated contributions through service and activity involvement in the school and community

Apart from being stellar music educators and creating one of the most excellent high school music departments in the state of Illinois, Doc Lamble and Doc Schnell's mission extended far beyond teaching music. They instilled in their students a sense of what it means to be decent, loving human beings and how to enact humanity and goodwill towards others. The student must meet the following requirements:

• Demonstrate financial need
• Maintain a 3.0 grade point average
• Demonstrate "a sense of humanity and goodwill towards others"
• Teacher reference
   

The Edge, a Glenview based business, is a Training/Physical Therapy facility whose mission is to empower active adults to trust their bodies to be the most athletic version of themselves, again.

Owned and operated by GBS graduates, The Edge, will be offering a scholarship that empowers a GBS senior with aspirations of entering the personal training, health & fitness, exercise science, and/or physical therapy world.

A current graduating GBS senior applying for this scholarship should have the following qualifications: 

• Health, Fitness, Exercise Science, Physical Therapy or Medical curriculum
• Average GPA: 3.0 or higher
• Acceptance at a 4-year college or university or work towards a nationally accredited health and fitness/training certification 
• Demonstrates and values a healthy lifestyle either through participating in athletics or other forms of physical activity
• This award is open to all students regardless of financial need

Please provide a creative and unique video or 500 word or less essay expressing your passion for health, fitness or rehab and helping others with an athletic mindset.
 

This scholarship is presented by the Friends of the Glenview Library.

• Demonstrates excellence in English, particularly in the understanding, interpretation and appreciation of literature

Named in memory of former teacher and Parents’ Association Advisor, Eileen Gamble.  This award is presented by the Parents’ Association.

• To be used by seniors for continuing education 
• Based on outstanding scholarship, and service to school and community

Members of the Social Studies department will be given the names of students who apply for the scholarship. The department makes a recommendation to the Honors and Awards scholarship committee, which is strongly considered in their final determinations of scholarship recipients.
Criteria is as follows:

• Graduating senior who intends to pursue Social Studies education
• Enrolled in Social Studies classes for at least 3 years
   

This scholarship is offered by Georgia Xamplas who has a deep love and appreciation for the arts. She lives her life inspiring those around her to explore the arts, whether it’s playing an instrument or attending a performance. She has passed along this great love to her children and grandchildren. 

This scholarship is awarded to a graduating Senior who has participated in GBS Drama productions and/or the AP Art Show and plans to continue studying either of these paths post-graduation.

• Minimum GPA 3.0
• Has demonstrated good character throughout their time at Glenbrook South High School
• Financial need will be considered
   

Presented by the Glenbrook Education Association (GEA) to the senior who demonstrates academic excellence and future dedication to the education profession.
 
• For students who have demonstrated an interest in teaching with the intention of entering elementary or secondary education
 

The GBSIL (Glenbrook South Instrumental League) is a group of parents whose children were part of the marching Titans and continue to support the program that was influential in their students’ personal growth and development.  This scholarship will go to:
 
• Graduating senior with the Glenbrook South Marching Titans
• Exemplifies true musicianship and leadership during their high school career at Glenbrook South
• Recipient has exhibited true Titan Spirit by their actions in the classroom, participation in band competitions, and performances at school and community events
 

To be awarded to two boys and two girls, graduating from Glenbrook South High School, who demonstrate school spirit through community service and activity involvement.

• Academic GPA of 2.0 or higher
• Demonstrates financial need

The Generosity Award shall be given to a student who demonstrates the qualities of compassion, strength, and dedication toward the betterment of GBS.  This new award is open to all students regardless of financial need.

Presented to an outstanding Senior who continues to make a positive contribution to the school despite having to deal with adverse events in his or her life and lives by one of the tenants of the Optimist Creed, and “looks at the sunny side of everything and makes their optimism come true."

• Graduating Senior attending a 4 year or 2 year college, or vocational training
• Financial need will be considered 

The Glenview Sunrise Rotary Club, in consultation with the community members of the Youth Careers Committee, grants a post-high school monetary scholarship for the further education of a worthy student who has excelled in the world of work during his/her high school years.   
 

• The student will be a graduating senior who has an exemplary record as a good school and community citizen 
• The youth will be an above average student in any program of studies, and will be planning on vocational training immediately after graduation 
• The student will have had outstanding work and/or volunteer performance in the community
• The student will have a demonstrated financial need 
• The student will have a personal record of adherence to Rotary International Four Way Test:

 
1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER 
FRIENDSHIPS?

Jaclyn Dana Harris (Wolfson) was a Glenbrook South graduate from the Class of 2004, who, in her four years of high school, was the epitome of a "good kid.” She passed away from an aggressive cancer on September 20, 2023.  The Harris Family honors her  memory with an award for a senior who might not have taken AP classes, or made an elite singing group, or excelled in sports, but showed themselves as kind, caring and an all around "good kid." 

Grace Kaskie graduated from Glenbrook South High School in 2007, and was very active throughout her days in the halls as a Titan. Grace was spending the summer of 2010 as a film industry intern in California when she was involved in a fatal car accident.  She was a member of Glenbrook South’s basketball and cross-country teams, driven to succeed in athletics as much as in her creative pursuits.  But film was her calling; particularly interested in documentaries, she worked as a producer on a variety of film projects through the Glenbrook South television program.
 
The Kaskie family has established this scholarship to honor an individual with the following qualifications:

•  Either plans to continue in a career in communications or has made a significant contribution at Glenbrook South High School in the area of television/film production
• Academic and financial need may be considered

This scholarship is presented by the Hellenic Club.

Iñaki was a beautiful young man, beloved son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend. He was very social and was always surrounded by friends. Iñaki studied at Glenbrook South High School, a terrific student, and athlete who always gave more than his best. He was a member and a captain of the soccer varsity team. He applied himself to any task in a manner that epitomized his pursuit of excellence and leadership in everything he did. He always expected perfection.

He graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign in May 2020 with a degree in Economics. He began working as a Media Associate at Chicago-based media agency Starcom, part of the Publicis network. The global Chairman and CEO praised him for his work ethic, dedication and for always being willing to go beyond expectations.But more than anything else, Iñaki was a beautiful person inside. He was well-mannered and had the most caring and kind soul.

• Senior male or female GBS varsity soccer team athlete
• Must be accepted to an accredited college or university with the intention of being college-bound
• Top student maintaining high academic standards
• Must demonstrate a sense of civic duty or leadership involvement by being part of clubs/organizations and participating in activities that benefit other students or the community.
   

This scholarship is presented by the Glenview Optimist Club.

• Promotes and lives a drug-free lifestyle

The Jeffrey Yordy Memorial Scholarship was established to recognize a horticulture student who has made an outstanding commitment to the horticulture program.  Mr. Yordy was a passionate horticulture teacher, respected and loved by his students; an esteemed leader in the field of horticulture education.  From his classroom to the greenhouse, Mr. Yordy's unique way of connecting theory to students' lives was exemplary.  Consideration for this scholarship will take into account some or all of the following:

• at least 2 yr. student in horticulture classes 
• at least 2 yr. participant on the horticulture team
• engaged in service extensions of the greenhouse into the school and Glenview community at large

Provides financial assistance to a Glenbrook South graduating Senior that is looking to continue his or her education by attending a 4-year college/university, 2-year collegiate program, or technical/trade school.

• Demonstrated student involvement and citizenship while at South
• Financial need is required
• Grade point average of 2.0 or higher

Presented by family members in honor of John Deom. This scholarship has been established by the Deom Family and their friends in honor of John’s lifetime commitment and passion to the arts. John’s work is in several major private and public art collections in the U.S. and Europe including: The Jalane and Richard Davidson Collection at The Chicago Art Institute, Oprah Winfrey private collection, McDonald’s Corporate Collection, Robert Rossi–Arnaud, Paris France.

• Graduating GBS senior that has demonstrated a commitment to pursue a major and career in 2D arts
• Student must provide evidence that he/she will be attending an accredited 2 or 4 year college or university
• Financial need will be considered
• Student should demonstrate an evolving philosophy on the importance of the visual arts and
• how it impacts society
• Students must write a brief statement for the application on their personal philosophy related to the arts and how they think art impacts society.
• Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of their academic achievement with special attention to ART classes and the content of their brief personal statement on the arts.
   

Northbrook/Glenview School District 30 has established the Lewis Blond Memorial Scholarship to honor the memory of a distinguished faculty member.  Lew Blond taught Applied Technology at Maple School for 17 years until his untimely death early in 2000.  He was revered and cherished by his students, colleagues and the parents whose children he served.
 

• Applicant must be a graduate of Maple School and graduating from Glenbrook South High School
• Applicant must express a desire to pursue a career in education or the trades (i.e. plumber, electrician, mechanic, etc.)
• Applicant must provide evidence of acceptance at an accredited two- or four-year college/university, or at a trade school for the fall of their graduating year
• Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of their high school career: academic achievement, citizenship, service, financial need, and the content of the essay

Linda was a long-time member of the GBS family and an exceptional teacher in the Science Department.  She was described by her colleagues as thoughtful, devoted, and incredibly hard-working.  Linda loved her work with students and made every person she encountered feel special.  True to her spirit, she embraced life and fought cancer with grace, hopefulness and humor.

The Linda Kocian Memorial Scholarship has been established for three graduating Glenbrook Seniors who demonstrate a commitment to learning; are inspired to pursue higher education in part because of their experience in Team Biology or Biology Studies; are attending a 4-year college, 2-year college or vocational training.  Financial need will be considered.
 

This scholarship is presented on behalf of the Kupfer and Grabell families in honor of 1980 Glenbrook South Alum Marla Robin Grabell. Marla Kupfer loved her time at Glenbrook South and went on to work in finance, raise a wonderful family, and then worked in healthcare here in Glenview.

• Presented to one female student based on student activity and academic good standing.      
• Outstanding spirit and commitment to Glenbrook South
• Financial need will be considered

Provided by the Glenview/Northbrook Kiwanis Club, and the Marjorie and Martin Topaz Charitable Remainder Unitrust bequest.

• Senior members of Key Club, based on involvement, leadership, devotion to community service, and personal character
• $1500 to one Key Club graduating senior who will be attending a four-year college or university
• $500 to one Key Club graduating senior who will be attending a two-year community college or vocational school

Awarded to a lacrosse player who has played at least 2 years on the GBS Boys' Lacrosse team, and exemplifies Mike's courage, fortitude, and good nature.

MLB Glenview's mission is to "Make Life Better" for others.  With this in mind, they are providing financial assistance to two Glenbrook South graduating Seniors who are looking to continue their education by attending a 4-year college/university, 2-year collegiate program, or technical/trade school.

• Financial need is required
• Grade point average of 2.5 or higher
• Essay required on the following topic: In 1000 words or less, please describe why college is important to you, how a college degree will help you make lives better, and what it means to you to give back.

Richard Goodspeed was a member of the faculty at Glenbrook South High School for 30 years – the first ten as a chemistry teacher and the last twenty as science instructional supervisor.  He was a major contributor in many areas that enriched the culture of this institution.  For many of his early years, Mr. Goodspeed was the senior class sponsor responsible for the organizing of many commencement exercises.  He served both on the teacher negotiating committee and later on the board of education negotiating team.  Much of the present teacher contract was originally written by him.  Curricularly in the science department, Mr. Goodspeed was responsible for a very progressive curricular design, one of which is STS biology.  He retired in 1994.  The scholarship fund was established after his death in the spring of 2002.
 

• Graduating GBS senior with a clearly demonstrated commitment to majoring in the field of science  (Examples would include natural and/or lab science, horticulture, nursing, medicine)
• Financial need must be demonstrated 
• Candidates must include in their statement their plans for college and any service/school activities in which you have participated that relate to the science field 

Presented by the Optimist Club of Glenview to a student interested in a vocational or technical career.

•  Must reside in Glenview (Zip 60025/60026)
• Display interest in vocational or technical career (technology, beauty school, automotive, nursing, etc.)
• Financial need will be considered

The Rose E. Bilger Scholarship was established by Rose's family in honor of her long-time commitment to the students of Glenbrook South High School. Through the Sunrise Rotary Club and in consultation with Glenbrook South High School administrative staff, this multi-year scholarship grants a post-high school monetary award to further the education of a worthy student who has excelled during his/her high school years. It is the hope of Rose's family that the recipient of this award will continue her legacy of compassion and service toward others.  

• The student will have a demonstrated financial need 
• The student will have a strong academic record with a 3.5 average or higher
• The student will be planning on pursuing a Bachelor's degree immediately following graduation
• The student will remain in good academic standing with his/her college
• The student will receive $2,500 per year for four years
• The student will have a personal record of adherence to the Rotary International Four-Way Test:

Ryan was a beloved son, brother, friend, and teammate to many on both the GBS gymnastics and wrestling teams at Glenbrook South High School. Ryan was hard-working, caring, and respectful, and always put his team and friends first.  Whether you were a classmate, teammate, or someone Ryan had just met, he always made you laugh and feel like you belonged. Ryan was passionate about life and all it had to offer. A current graduating senior applying for this scholarship should have the following qualifications:

• The student provided evidence they will be attending a 2- or 4-year college or university.
• The student should be a member of the GBS boy’s gymnastics or wrestling teams.
• Relevant GBS coaches will be contacted for a character recommendation.
• Priority consideration will be given to those students that demonstrate financial need.
   

The Ted G. Heiser Journalism Scholarship shall be awarded to a Glenbrook South High School student who has been a member of the "Oracle" or "Etruscan" staff. The scholarship will be provided for study at an accredited college or university.

• The student recipient will have maintained a GPA of 3.0 or higher during the course of their high school years and has the recommendation of the respective publication adviser.
• The applying student shall submit an essay expressing the importance of a free press in American society. The essay shall be no more than 1,000 words.
• Financial need may be considered as a factor in the scholarship award.
   

Provided by the Titan Booster Club.

• Awarded to one senior boy athlete and one senior girl athlete  
• Based on scholastic performance, good character, and exemplary sportsmanship   

Community scholarship offered by The Village of Glenview.

• Must be a resident of Glenview
• Must demonstrate financial need
• Must have education or career goals
• Must take course work at an approved ILLINOIS education institution
• Must demonstrate the ability to successfully complete course work

Awarded to an Interact member.

William “Will” Hicks, 2003 graduate of Glenbrook South, was a friend to everyone.  He was a student athlete who went out of his way to make everyone feel as if they were his best friend.  Will saw the best in everyone, and aspired to be the best himself by helping his friends discover their own best qualities.  Will graduated from Loyola University Chicago in 2007, and then went on to get his Master’s Degree at the University of Kent in Brussels, Belgium in International Conflict Analysis.  While in Brussels, he worked for NATO.  It was Will’s desire to help make this world a safer place.  In January of 2010, he was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer.  During the following ten months, he lived his life by defining the term “Will Power”- his positive attitude and infectious zest for life inspiring all around him.  Sadly, Will passed away on November 8, 2010 at the age of 26.
 
The Hicks family has established this scholarship in Will’s memory to honor an individual with the following qualifications:
 
• Student must have an academic GPA of 3.0 or higher
• Student must provide evidence that he/she will be attending a four-year college/university for the fall of their graduating year
• Student must be student athlete
• Financial need will be considered
• Student exemplifies citizenship, commitment, and team spirit
• Student encourages the best of others either athletically, academically, or from a community perspective

This scholarship will be awarded to one GBS Junior or Senior who has shown creativity in their filmmaking projects during their time in ATV classes. The awarded scholarship funds should be used for tuition for a filmmaking program (summer or after graduation) or for the purchase of filmmaking equipment. Financial need and artistic aptitude will be considered.
