Students begin to develop language competency within the context of culturally rich thematic units. Performance-based activities allow students to speak and write in practiced and familiar situations. Listening and reading skills are developed through the use of authentic materials to interpret basic stated information in familiar contexts. Students explore the Spanish speaking culture(s), as well as make comparisons and connections to their own experiences. Communication in the classroom (teacher-student and/or student-student) takes place primarily in Spanish.

Performance-based activities allow students to speak and write in practiced, familiar situations as well as occasional unfamiliar topics with increasing independence. Listening and reading skills are further developed through the use of authentic materials, including literature, to interpret basic information and recognize key details with emerging evidence of inference making at a deeper level. Students continue to explore the Spanish speaking culture(s) in new contexts, as well as make comparisons and connections to their own experiences. Communication in the classroom (teacher-student and/or student-student) takes place in Spanish.

This Pre-AP language and culture course helps students continue to develop their competence within the context of culturally rich thematic units based on the six AP themes. Performance-based activities allow students to speak and write independently in unfamiliar situations with an increased level of proficiency. Interpretive listening and reading tasks focus on both literal comprehension and inferential interpretation. A variety of authentic print, audio and video materials, from media and literary sources, provide the basis for exploration and comparisons of the Spanish speaking cultures. Classroom communication requires a higher level of language proficiency and takes place exclusively in Spanish.

Spanish 563 (FSP56300S)

The course aims to further develop student’s critical thinking and linguistic skills, as well as to deepen their cultural understanding of the Spanish speaking culture(s). This course is thematically anchored with authentic resources such as films, music, art and literature. Each theme requires students to explore current events, and the historical, sociocultural and geopolitical contexts with instructional support. This is done through tasks in the three modes of communication: interpersonal (spontaneous speaking and writing), presentational (rehearsed speaking and writing) and interpretive (listening and reading). The course is conducted entirely in Spanish.
Prerequisite: Recommendation of Spanish 463 teacher.

Students work to develop advanced linguistic and cultural competencies across the three modes of communication in the context of the six AP themes. Performance-based activities and assessments provide students with multiple opportunities to use the language independently in unfamiliar contexts. Interpretive listening and reading tasks involve authentic sources designed for native speakers and are focused on both literal comprehension and inferential interpretation. Students analyze and make comparisons with their own cultural products, practices, and perspectives through the use of print, audio and video materials from media and literary sources. Classroom communication requires a higher level of language proficiency and takes place exclusively in Spanish.
Prerequisite: Recommendation of Spanish 463/ Spanish 473/ SHL teacher.
Advanced Placement Spanish Literature and Culture 583 (FSP68300S)
Grade: 9,10,11,12 Length: 2 Sem Credit: 1.00 GPA: All Subject & Academic
This course introduces students to the formal study of Spanish, Latin American, and U.S. Hispanic literature. Critical reading and analytical writing skills in Spanish are developed, as well as making interdisciplinary connections and exploring linguistic and cultural comparisons. Students will analyze themes and features of artistic representations, audiovisual materials, and audio sources in Spanish related to course content. Classroom communication requires a higher level of language proficiency and takes place exclusively in Spanish.
Prerequisite: Recommendation of Spanish 473/ AP Spanish Language/ SHL teacher.
Spanish Exchange Program
The GBS Spanish Exchange Program returns for the 2022-2023 school year! Students from Spain will spend 10 days with their partners/host families during homecoming week (October 7-17, 2022). GBS students will travel to Spain to stay with their partner/host family during spring break of 2023.
Current sophomores and juniors enrolled in a level 3 Spanish course or above are eligible to apply. Students selected to participate in the exchange must be enrolled in a level 4 or 5 Spanish course during the 2022-2023 school year.
An informational meeting will be held on Tuesday February 8th at 6:00PM in-person in the GBS Lyceum as well as on Zoom. If unable to attend the meeting, please contact one of the sponsors of the Exchange program in addition to viewing the brief informational video.
Applications for the program will be due on Wednesday February 16th. By submitting an application for the program, students and families agree to abide by all of the program guidelines and the code of conduct. Students will be notified of their application status prior to March 18, 2022.
