American Sign Language 163 (FNL16300S)
Grade: 9,10,11,12 Length: 2 Sem Credit: 1.00 GPA: All Subject & Academic
Students begin to develop language competency across two modes of communication: expressive and receptive skills. Performance-based activities allow students to express themselves in ASL in practiced and familiar situations. Students are exposed to Deaf culture, participate in the Deaf community and make comparisons and connections to their own experiences. The use of ASL as the primary form of classroom communication increases as the year progresses (teacher-student and/or student-student).

Students continue to develop language competency across two modes of communication: expressive and receptive skills, applying more complex grammatical structures and vocabulary. Performance-based activities allow students to express themselves in ASL in practiced and familiar situations with increasing independence. Students continue to explore Deaf culture in new contexts, as well as make comparisons and connections to their own experiences. Participation in the Deaf community is a key component of the course. Communication in the classroom (teacher-student and/or student-student) takes place primarily in ASL.
Prerequisite: Recommendation of the ASL teacher.
American Sign Language 363 (FNL36300S)
Grade: 9,10,11,12 Length: 2 Sem Credit: 1.00 GPA: All Subject & Academic
Students strengthen language competency within the context of culturally rich thematic units, in conjunction with ASL 463, across two modes of communication: expressive and receptive skills. Performance-based activities allow students to express themselves in ASL in practiced and new situations with greater independence, with expanded use of ASL grammar, classifiers and storytelling. Students participate in the Deaf community, and make comparisons and connections to their own culture and experiences. Films, readings, guest speakers and other authentic resources are used to enhance awareness and understanding of Deaf culture. Communication in the classroom (teacher-student and/or student-student) takes place exclusively in ASL.
Prerequisite: Recommendation of the ASL teacher.

Grade: 9,10,11,12 Length: 2 Sem Credit: 1.00 GPA: All Subject & Academic
