INTRODUCTION TO BROADCASTING 161 (RTB06100S)

Introduction to Broadcasting is the gateway class for students interested in becoming involved with Glenbrook South’s radio station (88.5 FM) and/or Glenbrook South’s cable television station (GBS-TV) and film studio. In this course, students are immersed in the study of radio, television, and film with an emphasis on increasing media literacy and awareness. Many hands-on projects, such as directing and producing radio, television, and film projects are part of the curriculum.
BEGINNING RADIO PRODUCTION 161 (RTR16100S)

This course is designed to familiarize students with radio broadcasting and production. Students are given opportunities to analyze the needs of the community to guide the design, development, and evaluation of on-air content. Script writing and radio production are both done in the context of real radio production studios. Laboratory time in class is provided, but out-of-class time is required to develop skills in production, writing, and evaluation.
PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of Introduction to Broadcasting 161 OR Instructor approval.

This is an advanced course in radio theory and production. Students in this course are expected to be conversant with the terminology of broadcast production, evaluation, and performance. In their assigned roles in specific station departments, students have opportunities to develop skills with digital production/editing tools, station programming, performance evaluation, and organizational management. Students also have opportunities to evaluate the role of the district radio station, WGBK, in the community. Considerable out-of-class time is required. Course may be repeated for additional credit.
PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of previous Radio Production course and instructor approval.

Students in the Radio Broadcasting program may be invited to enroll in this advanced radio broadcasting and leadership course in which students are expected to demonstrate expertise in broadcast journalism, production, and operation of an FM radio station. Students will make content decisions, manage staff production deadlines, mentor staff members, and will learn a variety of organizational and management techniques to assist them in working in professional radio stations. Considerable out-of-class time will be required. Course may be repeated for additional credit.
PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of Introduction to Broadcasting 161, Beginning Radio Production 161, Advanced Radio Production 261, completion of an application process and Instructor approval.
BEGINNING TELEVISION AND FILM PRODUCTION 161 (RTT16100S)

A prerequisite for the Advanced Television and Film Production class, this course in television and film emphasizes the technical and creative aspects of television and film work. Students learn how to operate cameras, editing software, and other broadcasting equipment. The first half of this semester class is spent working on editing projects, producing and directing a live in-studio television program and producing a feature story. The second half of the semester is spent studying film production, as students undertake the writing and directing of several narrative film projects. Lights, camera, action!

ADVANCED TELEVISION AND FILM PRODUCTION 261, 361, 461, 561, 661, 761 (RTT26100S, 36100S, 46100S, 56100S, 66100S, 76100S)

Students enrolled in Advanced Television and Film Production class produce all of the programming seen on Glenbrook South Television (GBS-TV), the school’s cable channel, which is broadcast to the Glenview community. This class provides numerous exciting opportunities for students to create and direct a wide variety of film and video projects. Working individually and in groups, students produce news and entertainment programs such as Titan Sports and The Glenbrook South Report. In the first semester, students produce a sports video, documentary, narrative, commercial, and PSA. In the second semester, students film and produce a behind-the-scenes TV program about the Variety Show. The year winds down with a spring sports video and the culminating Capstone Project. Students who successfully complete this course will have the foundation for a career in the television and film industries.

Students in the Television and Film program may be invited to enroll in this advanced television broadcasting and leadership course in which students are expected to demonstrate expertise in television and film production and operation of Glenbrook South Television (GBS-TV), the school’s cable channel which reaches over 11,000 families in the Glenview area. Students will make content decisions, manage production schedules, mentor staff members, and will learn a variety of organizational and management techniques to assist them in working in professional television and film studios. Course may be repeated for additional credit.
PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of Introduction to Broadcasting 161, Beginning Television and Film Production 161, and Advanced Television and Film Production 261 OR Instructor approval.

This course is designed specifically for students with an interest in broadcast journalism. Students are responsible for the design and development of on-air journalistic packages that meet the perceived needs of the community. Both news and sports packages will provide coverage of local events and provide the community with a window into Glenbrook South. Finally, students are assigned daily programs that are planned, performed, and evaluated for content, relevance, and aesthetics. Out-of-class time is required. Course may be repeated for additional credit.
