An introductory level course designed to allow a beginning level student to develop basic skills, an understanding of ceramics as an art form, and as a means toward expressing one’s interests three dimensionally.
ADVANCED CERAMICS 261 (ACE26200S)

Advanced level ceramics classes designed for students to develop skills in idea development, planning and reflective critiquing leading to well-made meaningful artwork. Students develop proficiency in clay use, surface applications, and wheel-throwing techniques.
PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of Beginning Ceramics 161.
BEGINNING DRAWING 161 (ADR16200S)

This is a fundamental course to acquaint students with basic drawing and design concepts focused around a balance between observation and imagination. Various media and techniques are taught. Students will gain art appreciation by learning about historical and contemporary art created by influential artists.
ADVANCED DRAWING 261 (ADR26200S)

This course is the second in the drawing sequence and will teach the development of advanced drawing styles. Students will gain a wider range of technical drawing skills in the areas of figure drawing, design, still-life, illustrating story books, as well as creating ideas behind their artworks

BEGINNING PAINTING 161 (APA16200S)

This course is a fundamental course to acquaint students with basic painting techniques and concepts. This course will introduce students to various painting techniques and painting media ranging from but not limited to; acrylic, watercolor, etc.. Historical and current painters will be explored as well as a variety of colors, textures, designs, composition and painting styles.
ADVANCED PAINTING 261 (APA26200S)
GRADE: 9, 10, 11, 12 LENGTH: 1 Sem CREDIT: 0.50 GPA: All Subject
This course is the second in the painting sequence and will teach advanced painting skills and the idea development process. Students will learn collegiate painting skills, learn to paint with oil paint and a variety of mixed media as well as learning how to build their own canvases. Opportunities will be provided for students to develop their own styles, exhibit their work and develop a portfolio.
PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of Beginning Painting 161.

An introductory level course created to have students explore basic drawing, painting, and ceramic concepts through a variety of projects that encourage the development of elemental art skills combined with basic English Language art vocabulary proficiency. Limited to students in the ELL program.

Photography is the art of seeing, thinking, composing, processing and presenting images. The goal of the GBS Photography program is to nurture the ability and desire of students to make images that inform, surprise, enlighten or mystify. Students will be introduced to photography through the fascinating processes of experimentation that are B&W film and print development. For our digital exploration, students will work with digital cameras and Adobe Photoshop . This course builds the foundation for visual literacy from work in class, enjoying art in museums to processing the flood of images they are surrounded by each day. We will be using 35mm manual film cameras and digital cameras. The supply kit is available at the school bookstore.

In this course, students use Adobe Photoshop, building digital skills to more dynamically control and strengthen their image making experiences. Alternative processes, toy cameras, smartphone apps and online image sites will be discussed and explored. As they investigate these new techniques and resources, students have much more opportunity to solve visual problems in creative ways. Regular critiques and discussion of historical (and current) events help examine images in a critical way that leads to inspiration and artistic growth.
PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of Photography 161.
PHOTOGRAPHY 361 (APH36100S)

This course includes advanced digital manipulation techniques, and more in-depth digital camera handling. Each student will develop a personal photo portfolio.
PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of Photography 261.
PHOTOGRAPHY 461 (APH46100S)

A continuation of Photography 361. Students will have the opportunity to work on independent projects including the creation of a personal portfolio, possibly for college admissions.

BEGINNING SCULPTURE 161 (ACS16200S)
GRADE: 9, 10, 11, 12 LENGTH: 1 Sem CREDIT: 0.50 GPA: All Subject
This course is designed to enable students to explore the creation of three-dimensional, sculptural artwork using a variety of methods and materials. Students will work in abstract (nonobjective) and representational forms using additive and subtractive techniques. Materials include wood, metal, plaster, paper, wire and styrofoam.
ADVANCED SCULPTURE 261 (ACS26200S)

This course builds off the work completed in Sculpture 161 by adding complexity, variation in scale, additional materials, and new techniques. Students will have the opportunity to design some of their own assignments as a way to discover their own voice as an artist.

AP ART & DESIGN 183 (AAF58300S)

The Advanced Placement Art & Design course is designed for students who are interested in developing an A.P. Drawing (which includes painting), 2-D or 3-D Design Portfolio and are committed to developing mastery in concept, composition and execution of ideas. A.P. Art is not based on a written exam, instead, each student is required to submit a body of Art work comprised of 15 Sustained Investigation Art works and 5 Selected Art works for evaluation by the A.P. College Board in May. The main focus of this course is to learn, develop and grow as a serious Artist. This course will teach the process students will follow to develop a cohesive, original, visual idea called the Sustained Investigation. Upon successful completion of the course at the end of the school year, at the end of April, the A.P. Art students will display all of their Artworks in the annual end of the year A.P. Art show. Following the A.P. Art show, the Art students will submit their digital portfolios to the College Board for evaluation and scoring.
