Sloan Greenfield and Gavin Leahy were honored with recognition back in July by the Illinois High School Musical Theatre Awards program.
In 2020, IHSMTA honored Greenfield for her role as ‘Mimi’ in Rent and Leahy was honored for his role ‘Tom Collins’ in Rent.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic all submissions were viewed only by video. Over 200 people submitted to the competition and 24 received recognition.
Greenfield said she was honored to be recognized by IHSMTA for her fall 2019 performance as ‘Mimi’ in Rent.
“Being able to play Mimi has been one of the best times of my life and it felt really good to have that validation and to know that my hard work and the amazing work of the cast and crew paid off,” Greenfield said.
Greenfield has been a part of the musical theater community since she was in fourth grade and said although she doesn’t plan to continue it as a career, she hopes to continue to participate in music and theater in some way after she graduates high school.
Leahy said playing ‘Tom Collins’ in Rent allowed him to grow as an actor.
“I truly got the ability to create my own character and to deliver such an important message to the community. Receiving this award felt like the perfect culmination of all of my work in high school. I felt I was finally being recognized for something I worked so hard in,” Leahy said.
Leahy currently attends UCLA and studies musical theater. Leahy hopes to continue to pursue his passion for acting after graduation.
IHSMTA is part of ‘Broadway in Chicago’ and has been recognizing high school students for their performances and musicals since 2012.
This is the first time GBS students have been recognized by IHSMTA for their performance in musical theater.
